Power BI is changing fast—and not just on the surface. Over the past year, Microsoft has continued adding new capabilities to Power BI: more AI help, better ways to build reports, stronger modelling tools, and closer integration with Microsoft Fabric. For analysts, this means one thing: the way we work in Power BI is evolving quickly, and it is important to keep up.
In this blog, I have pulled together the most important Power BI updates from official Microsoft announcements and documentation released through 2025 and into 2026. Instead of listing every single update, I focused on the ones that are most likely to change how analysts build reports, work with data models, collaborate with others, and deliver insights faster.
1. Visual Calculations Are Now More Practical
One of the most useful reporting improvements is the continued growth of visual calculations, along with better control over totals such as average and none. A visual calculation is a calculation you create directly inside a chart or table, without writing DAX measures in the data model.

In simple terms, this means you can do more calculations directly inside a visual without changing the whole data model. That is helpful because analysts often need quick answers while designing reports. Instead of creating many extra measures, you can now handle some analysis right in the report itself. That makes report building faster, cleaner, and easier to manage.

How to Use Visual Calculations (Quick Example)
- Select a table or a matrix visual in your report
- Go to the ribbon and click “New Visual Calculation”
- Enter a calculation (for example : RunningSum)
- Power BI automatically applies the calculation inside the visual
You get a new calculation directly on the visual without adding a new DAX measure to the semantic model.
2. PBIR Is Changing How Reports Are Managed
Until recently, most Power BI report development revolved around PBIX files, which work well when working alone but can create challenges when multiple analysts need to collaborate, track changes, or manage different versions of a report.
Power BI’s Enhanced Report Format, known as PBIR, improves this in Power BI Project (PBIP) workflows. Instead of saving everything in one file, PBIR stores your report as a structured folder containing multiple files, each representing different parts of the report.

In simple terms, Power BI is moving from a “single locked file” to a more organized, transparent structure.
This change makes a real difference in everyday work. Analysts can now compare changes between versions more easily, reduce the risk of overwriting each other’s work, and collaborate more effectively on the same report.
In practical terms, this means fewer version issues, smoother teamwork, and a more manageable development process—especially in larger projects.
3. TMDL View Brings Code-Based Modelling Closer to Everyday Use
As Power BI models grow larger, managing them becomes more difficult. Making bulk changes, documenting your model clearly, or reusing logic across reports can quickly turn into a slow and manual process.
This is where TMDL (Tabular Model Definition Language) view comes in. TMDL view introduces a code-style representation of your semantic model, allowing you to see and edit tables, columns, measures, and relationships in a structured format.

In simple terms, instead of clicking through multiple menus in Model View, you can work with your model in a more organised and scalable way.

This makes a big difference in real-world scenarios. For example, you can:
- Make bulk changes across multiple tables more quickly
- Reuse parts of your model in other projects
- Document your model more clearly
- Track changes more effectively when working in teams
Even if you are not a developer, this shift matters. Power BI is becoming more structured and more team-friendly, and TMDL is a big part of that transition.
In practical terms, analysts who understand this approach will be able to work faster, maintain cleaner models, and collaborate more effectively on larger projects.
4. Semantic Model Editing Is Becoming Easier and Better for Teams
In many Power BI projects, the data model is not built once—it continues to evolve. Measures change, relationships are updated, and new requirements come in. Managing these changes, especially when working in a team, can quickly become difficult and time-consuming.
Microsoft has made several improvements to how semantic models can be edited, including better support for live editing, browser-based model development, and version history.

- Revert to earlier versions when needed
- Collaborate on the same model with fewer conflicts
Since data models are constantly evolving in real projects, these improvements help reduce errors and make teamwork smoother.
This means less time fixing issues, fewer version conflicts, and a more efficient workflow when building and maintaining Power BI models.
5. Time Intelligence Is Becoming More Flexible
Many analysts struggle with time-based analysis in Power BI—especially when working with fiscal calendars, custom time periods, or more advanced comparisons like rolling averages.
In simple terms, time intelligence is what allows you to compare performance over time—such as month-over-month growth, year-over-year trends, or rolling averages.
Microsoft is making time intelligence in Power BI more flexible and easier to apply in real-world scenarios, including calendar-based time intelligence (currently in preview), which Microsoft recommends for the highest flexibility and performance.
This makes a big difference in everyday analysis. Analysts can now:

Second, it is becoming more team- and developer-friendly, which means better collaboration and version control are becoming more important. Third, it is becoming more action-oriented, which means reports are no longer just for viewing insights—they are becoming places where people also act on them.
